Ariel Kempf

Ariel Kempf, The Mustard Maker

Ariel Kempf was raised in Opelousas, Louisiana, where food and cooking are as important as air and water, and sharing meals is a quintessential human experience. It was here that she first tasted creole mustard, a staple in her mother’s kitchen (and everyone else’s, for that matter).

After moving to Portland and spending years working in restaurants and honing her cooking chops, she set out to re-create that essential taste from her childhood. After a bit of trial and error, Creaux Mustards were born the way we all are: with a lot of pushing, a big old mess, and a joyful result.

Ariel’s been sharing her creations with her friends for a while. But now it’s time to share them with everyone. Enjoy!

CAN MUSTARD MAKE A PERSON HAPPY?

Kempf's Creole

Kempf’s Creole

Creole mustard is a staple in southern Louisiana kitchens. But in Portland kitchens, not so much. So Ariel set out to make it herself. After tweaking the ingredients to suit her own taste, Kempf’s Creole was born.

  • Made with organic ingredients

  • Has a grainy texture with a Dijon-like flavor

  • Not for the wimpy or spice-averse

  • Excellent in meat marinades or on a hearty sammich

Leola's Lime

Leola’s Lime

This isn’t a creole mustard per se, but it’s a bright and zesty cousin that does its own thing. Named after Ariel’s great-grandmother, Leola’s Lime mustard is the thing that’s been missing from your life. You just don’t know it yet.

  • Made with fresh lime and lime zest

  • Insanely tasty and downright delightful

  • Try it in deviled eggs or cole slaw. Then bring us some.

Ruth's Rosemary

Ruth’s Rosemary

As it turns out, adding earthy rosemary to mustard is a genius move. It’s bold and spicy and unlike anything you’ve ever tasted. In fact, this stuff is so good, it makes you want to slap someone. But Ariel’s grandmother (who the mustard is named after) wouldn’t approve. So just buy some and trust us.

  • Made with organic ingredients

  • Intensely flavored and maddeningly original

  • Throw it on something meaty and grill it. You can thank us later.
